The world needs to finance the transition to a more sustainable economy and society. This involves decarbonising all sectors of activity, restoring ecosystems and saving resources, while ensuring a fair and equitable effort distribution.
The European political will is there; the Green Deal, the Environmental Taxonomy, the SFDR and CRSD directive, the future CS Due Diligence Regulation aim to provide a pan-European sustainability framework for economic activity and EU market participants.
Is this framework achieving its purpose? Will this framework assist in investors’ steering their investments towards sustainable assets and projects? Where does EU regulation stand, from a global perspective? How do we need to amend the EU framework to ensure that environmental and social sustainability is more and better considered and integrated by financial market participants?
After the green investment fund market in January, we are again discussing sustainable finance with this talk on sustainable financial regulation.
Prof. Dr. Dirk A. Zetzsche, LL.M., Full Professor in Financial Law at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF) of the University of Luxembourg, is the speaker of this talk. He holds the ADA Chair in Financial Law (inclusive finance) and functions as one of the Coordinators of FDEF’s House of Sustainable Governance and Markets.
Abstract: Sustainability has become a new paradigm of financial markets regulation. The presentation introduces into the basic concepts of sustainability-oriented financial regulation and explains the difficulties regulators face that seek to further sustainable conduct by way of financial regulation. The audience will be familiarized with the double materiality concept as well as environmental and social notions of sustainability, as well as the respective legislation embedding the Sustainable Financial Action Plan. The presentation will conclude with a view on Inclusive Green Finance, a regulatory approach seeking to balance the social and environmental dimensions of sustainability.
Dr. Marco Bodellini will moderate this talk. He is a Research Scientist at the ADA Chair and at the FDEF’s House of Sustainable Governance and Markets. Qualified lawyer admitted to the Italian Bar, he is also a member of the Expert Group advising the European Parliament on bank crisis management matters.
