The University of Luxembourg has identified health and sustainability as two of the three major challenges to tackle in the future. Not only is it important to address those challenges, but it is important to address them together.

According to the World Health Organization, 36% of the lung cancer are related to air pollution. With an aging and growing population facing more chronic diseases, the demand for homecare and medical services is set to grow, while the health sector alone already accounts for 8% of France’s carbon footprint (as reported by The Shift Project). In addition, the COVID19 pandemic highlighted the lack of consideration for the life balance and health of the professional of the sector. And who stands at the forefront of this work? Nurses. It makes complete sense to think of medical care and sustainability as intertwined challenges. Not only the health sector needs to address its impact, but it also needs to address its own sustainability.

Prof. Dr. Marie Friedel trained as a paediatric nurse and holds an interuniversity Diploma in acute/chronic paediatric pain and paediatric palliative care (Université Claude Bernard, France) and a Master and PhD in public health (UCLouvain). Her clinical experience is rooted in paediatric palliative home care. In August 2022, she was appointed full professor at the University of Luxembourg with the mandate to implement new bachelors in nursing. Her research is focused on paediatric palliative care, patient centred outcomes measures, quality of life, clinical ethics, and spiritual care, by using mixed methods designs and a strong collaborative approach with all stakeholders.

Abstract: Looking at the current massive global nursing shortage (10 million according to the WHO in 2020), how can we address the sustainability of the nursing profession in the same way as we take actions to protect our environment?

During this lunch talk, the intertwined domains of self-care, relation with others and our planet will be discussed.

Ensuring the sustainability of nurses covers the promotion of their health and well-being in constant interaction with a changing ecosystem. Beyond the complexity and vulnerability, they face on a daily basis, nurses are leaders and changemakers to implement concrete strategies in their professional environment to promote quality of life for human beings and protect our planet.

Prof. Dr. Claus Vögele will moderate this talk. He is full professor of Clinical and Health Psychology at the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. He is Head of the University’s Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS). Previously he was Head of the Department of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences. He leads the research group Self-regulation and Health, is Director of the Master programme in Psychotherapy, and is a licensed psychotherapist and health psychologist.
