Do you like scientific discussion? And how about Pizza?

If we gained your attention with ‘scientific’, or at least with ‘Pizza’, then you are already looking forward to the right event!

Pizza Club is a regularly held Journal Club event co-organized by The Representatives of the Doctoral Programme in Systems and Molecular Biomedicine, part of the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering (DSSE); and the Uni.lu student association ISCB RSG Luxembourg.

In short, Students (PhD candidates) present a scientific paper (+- 20 mins) they find interesting or that inspired the development of their individual PhD project (doesn’t need to be authored by the speaker).

There will be a open discussion round after each scientific presentation (2-3 students per event), followed by informal and fun chatting with some pizzas around!

Moreover, each presentation of peer-reviewed papers will be rewarded by 0.5 ECTS!

Speakers :

Marianne MEYERS (https://lu.linkedin.com/in/mariannemeyers)

Introduction: Marianne is a third year PhD student in the Molecular Disease Mechanisms (MDM) group at the DLSM working with Assist. Prof. Elisabeth Letellier. They are exploring the role of the microbiome in the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC), particularly in her project, in a metastatic setting.

Article: ‘Tumor-resident intracellular microbiota promotes metastatic colonization in breast cancer’, Fu et al. 2022 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2022.02.027)

Article description: The authors are one of the first to describe how intra-tumoral bacteria affect circulating tumours cell and decipher their role in promoting metastasis.

Elena VALCESCHINI (https://lu.linkedin.com/in/elena-valceschini-1808a81b0)

Introduction: Elena is a 2nd year PhD student at the Systems Biology group under the supervision of Dr. Lasse Sinkkonen at DLSM where they study the epigenetic regulation in different biological systems, in her project she studies the regulatory epigenetic networks of the dopaminergic neurons as main target of Parkinson’s disease.

Article: ‘Molecular profiling of human substantia nigra identifies diverse neuron types associated with vulnerability in Parkinson’s disease’, Wang et al. 2024 (https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adi8287)

Article description: Here they performed the single nuclear RNAseq analysis of midbrain Substantia Nigra human samples from individuals with and without PD, they identified cell clusters corresponding to specific neuron types and investigated the genomic features of each cluster. Finally they identified the RIT2-enriched population that appeared to be one the most vulnerable in PD. They thus validated this population in midbrain organoids and mouse and they found specific transcriptomic signatures.
