Descartes’ philosophy is concerned with knowledge and the appropriate way to deal with it. Only when we understand the processes and phenomena of life correctly can we deal with them and handle them.

Firstly, this is directed towards nature, which, according to Descartes, must be ‘dominated and possessed’ by humans in order to allow its forces to work for them. The same applies to our human nature and our soul: only when we can understand and control our passions and desires is it possible to live in inner peace.

If these two spheres of human life can be understood and ‘controlled’, does this also apply to the social and political spheres? Here, human freedom is emphasised particularly often – and for this very reason a comprehensive understanding of these phenomena seems impossible. Accordingly, the philosopher must be wary of giving political advice, except perhaps that of constantly promoting philosophical and scientific research.

In this workshop, Norbert Campagna (Professeur-associé at the University of Luxembourg and philosophy teacher at the LGE) invites you to discover Descartes and deepen your understanding of this philosopher in the light of his work Discours de la Méthode.
