Bioethical questions of our time – combining science and ethics
How can we deal morally with the findings of biology and medicine? This question is becoming increasingly urgent, especially since humans have begun to understand themselves as biological beings. In view of current challenges such as environmental destruction, poverty and wars, bioethical considerations are increasingly taking centre stage. At the same time, the belief in progress, for example in the transhumanism debate, raises new moral questions: What do we owe other living beings? Where does man’s egoism end and his responsibility for the community begin?
In this workshop, we want to work together on the basics of bioethics and discuss practical case studies. We will address questions such as:
- What principles guide bioethics?
- Can humans fulfil their responsibility towards other living beings?
- Is the ideal of fair co-operation realistic, or does the ‘right of the strongest’ dominate?
We look forward to your perspectives and a lively discussion!
Invited to the workshop: Martin Welsch (University of Wuppertal) and Nora Schleich (EwB). Martin Welsch specialises in the fields of bioethics, practical philosophy, philosophy of law and state, punishment and torture.
