This round table is organised in parallel to the hosting by the University of the exhibition ‘Human Rights Defenders’ from 6 to 15 November on the ground floor of the Maison du Savoir.
Across the world, the security of individuals and organisations defending human rights is threatened. Human rights violations continue to worsen, in a context where the space accorded to civil society is dangerously shrinking in a growing number of countries. Human rights defenders, engaged in the peaceful struggle against social and environmental injustices, are frequently the victims of violent repression.
This round table, organised by five Luxembourg NGOs active in the field together with the UNESCO Chair of Human Rights at the University of Luxembourg, seeks to raise awareness of such troubling situations and to promote critical reflection on how they may most effectively be addressed. Panels will bring together human rights defenders from different global regions who will give accounts of their experiences, as well as representatives from civil society organisations, government, and academe. We are honoured that the event will be opened by a keynote address from Mary Lawlor, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders.
