Do you like scientific discussion? And how about Pizza?
If we gained your attention with ‘scientific’, or at least with ‘Pizza’, then you are already looking forward to the right event!
Pizza Club is a regularly held Journal Club event co-organized by The Representatives of the Doctoral Programme in Systems and Molecular Biomedicine, part of the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering (DSSE); and the Uni.lu student association ISCB RSG Luxembourg.
In short, Students (PhD candidates) present a scientific paper (+- 20 mins) they find interesting or that inspired the development of their individual PhD project (doesn’t need to be authored by the speaker).
There will be a open discussion round after each scientific presentation (2-3 students per event), followed by informal and fun chatting with some pizzas around!
Moreover, each presentation of peer-reviewed papers will be rewarded by 0.5 ECTS!
- Anushka Shukla (https://researchportal.lih.lu/en/persons/anushka-shukla)
About : Anushka is a second year PhD student in the NutriHealth group at LIH. Her PhD project involves exploring the ‘Impact of Dietary fibers on the bioavailability of carotenoids in human gut’.
Paper title: Some Dietary Fibers Reduce the Absorption of Carotenoids in Women (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10573545/)
Paper description : Dietary fiber appears to impact the bioavailability of carotenoids such as β-carotene, lycopene, and lutein when consumed with a meal. In a study involving six participants, the water-soluble fibers (pectin, guar, and alginate) were associated with a 33–43% reduction in the area-under-curve (AUC24h) of β-carotene. Similarly, all tested fibers reduced the AUC24h of lycopene and lutein by 40–74%. The effect on canthaxanthin approached significance (P = 0.059), while no effect was observed for α-tocopherol.
- Göksu Oral Tüzün ( https://www.uni.lu/fstm-en/people/goksu-oral-tuzun/ )
About: 1st year PhD student in Cancer Cell Biology and Drug Discovery group under the supervision of Daniel Abankwa. Researching on understanding the structural and functional details of SPRED, a negative regulator of the MAPK pathway, and its interaction with RAF.
Paper title: “ Unveiling the domain-specific and RAS isoform-specific details of BRAF kinase regulation” by Trebino et al., eLife, 2023. (https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.88836.3)
Paper description: This research paper explores the intricate activation mechanism of BRAF kinase, a key player in the MAPK signaling pathway. By investigating the inter- and intramolecular interactions within BRAF, the study reveals the crucial roles of specific domains, namely the BSR and CRD, in regulating BRAF activation in a RAS isoform-dependent manner. These findings provide new insights into the complex regulation of BRAF and may contribute to the development of more targeted cancer therapies.
If we attracted your interest by now, feel free to join the monthly Pizza Club, either as part of Audience or as a registered Speaker. For the latter, please kindly use this form to sign up as an upcoming Speaker, by choosing your category of paper and desired month to present. Looking forward to seeing you at the next Pizza Club!
