Do you like scientific discussion? And how about Pizza?

If we gained your attention with ‘scientific’, or at least with ‘Pizza’, then you are already looking forward to the right event!

Pizza Club is a regularly held Journal Club event co-organized by The Representatives of the Doctoral Programme in Systems and Molecular Biomedicine, part of the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering (DSSE); and the Uni.lu student association ISCB RSG Luxembourg.

In short, Students (PhD candidates) present a scientific paper (+- 20 mins) they find interesting or that inspired the development of their individual PhD project (doesn’t need to be authored by the speaker).

There will be a open discussion round after each scientific presentation (2-3 students per event), followed by informal and fun chatting with some pizzas around!

Moreover, each presentation of peer-reviewed papers will be rewarded by 0.5 ECTS!

Presenter: Gabriela RETAMALES (https://www.uni.lu/lcsb-en/people/maria-gabriela-retamales-baraona/)

Presenter introduction: Gabriela is a 2nd year PhD student at the Systems Control Group – LCSB, and currently researching on gene regulatory networks from single-cell RNA sequencing.

Paper presented: “CellRank for directed single-cell fate mapping” by Lange et al., Nature Methods 2022 (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41592-021-01346-6)

Paper description: CellRank leverages on RNA velocity, KNN and cluster analysis to map the fate of single cells in different scenarios, not only normal development but also regeneration, reprogramming and disease. The method automatically detects initial, intermediate and terminal cell states, and predicts fate potentials and cell trajectories. In the paper, the method is applied to several transcriptomic datasets: 1) pancreas development, 2) MEFs reprogramming, and 3) lung regeneration.

Presenter: Polina NOVIKOVA (https://www.uni.lu/fstm-en/people/polina-novikova/)

Presenter introduction: Polina is a 4th year PhD student at the Systems Ecology group under the supervision of Paul Wilmes and Patrick May.

Paper presented: “Multiomics implicate gut microbiota in altered lipid and energy metabolism in Parkinson’s disease” by Pereira et al., npj Parkinson’s Disease (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41531-022-00300-3)

Paper description: The study investigates the role of the gut microbiome in the metabolic disruptions observed in Parkinson’s disease (PD) using a multiomics approach. The study integrates metagenomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics to reveal significant alterations in lipid and energy metabolism linked to changes in gut microbial composition in PD patients. Key findings include the identification of specific gut microbiota species associated with dysregulated lipid metabolism, particularly in pathways related to bile acid and short-chain fatty acid production. These microbial alterations were correlated with changes in host metabolic processes, suggesting a potential role for gut microbiota in PD-related metabolic dysfunction and offering insights into the gut-brain axis in neurodegenerative disease.

If we attracted your interest by now, feel free to join the monthly Pizza Club, either as part of Audience or as a registered Speaker. For the latter, please kindly use this form to sign up as an upcoming Speaker, by choosing your category of paper and desired month to present. Looking forward to seeing you at the next Pizza Club!
