Do you like scientific discussion? And how about Pizza?

If we gained your attention with ‘scientific’, or at least with ‘Pizza’, then you are already looking forward to the right event!

Pizza Club is a regularly held Journal Club event co-organized by The Representatives of the Doctoral Programme in Systems and Molecular Biomedicine, part of the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering (DSSE); and the Uni.lu student association ISCB RSG Luxembourg.

In short, Students (PhD candidates) present a scientific paper (+- 20 mins) they find interesting or that inspired the development of their individual PhD project (doesn’t need to be authored by the speaker).

There will be a open discussion round after each scientific presentation (2-3 students per event), followed by informal and fun chatting with some pizzas around!

Moreover, each presentation of peer-reviewed papers will be rewarded by 0.5 ECTS!

Presenters:

Elena VALCESCHINI (link: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elena-valceschini-1808a81b0/)

Presenter introduction: Elena is a 2nd year PhD student at the Systems Biology group under the supervision of Dr. Lasse Sinkkonen at DLSM which is studying the epigenetic regulation in different biological systems. In her project she investigates the regulatory epigenetic networks of the dopaminergic neurons as main target of Parkinson’s disease.

Article: “Single-cell genomic profiling of human dopamine neurons identifies a population that selectively degenerates in Parkinson’s disease” (link: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-022-01061-1)

Article description: Here they performed the single nuclear RNAseq analysis of midbrain human samples and compared them to other species to study the identity of the dopaminergic neurons and their regulatory networks. They identified 10 different subpopulations of dopaminergic neurons and the ones most sensitive to the degeneration in Parkinson’s disease.

Catarina CORREIA TAVARES BERNARDINO (link: https://www.linkedin.com/in/catarina-correia-tavares-bernardino)

Presenter Information: Catarina has recently started her PhD with Dr. Elisabeth Letellier. The topic of her PhD is currently defined as “Investigating Interactions Between Bacterial Colorectal Cancer (CRC) Onco-Clusters (CROCs) and their Consequences to CRC Initiation and Progression”. She will start by culturing a subset of know bacteria enriched in CRC patients and determining which ones form these CROC biofilms. Subsequently, she will study the interactions between these CROC members and their consequences in the CRC context in vitro, in situ, and in vivo.

Article: “Analysis of Fusobacterium persistence and antibiotic response in colorectal cancer” (link: https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aal5240)

Article description: This study demonstrates that the same bacteria (Fusobacterium, Bacteroides, Selenomonas, and Prevotella species) that are seen colonizing human colorectal cancer tissue, are also present in paired metastatic sites. The researchers also showed that mice possessing colon cancer xenografts could be treated with the antibiotic metronidazole to reduce Fusobacterium load, cancer cell proliferation, and overall tumor growth.

If we attracted your interest by now, feel free to join the monthly Pizza Club, either as part of Audience or as a registered Speaker. For the latter, please kindly use this form to sign up as an upcoming Speaker, by choosing your category of paper and desired month to present. Looking forward to seeing you at the next Pizza Club!
