Do you like scientific discussion? And how about Pizza?

If we gained your attention with ‘scientific’, or at least with ‘Pizza’, then you are already looking forward to the right event!

Pizza Club is a regularly held Journal Club event co-organized by The Representatives of the Doctoral Programme in Systems and Molecular Biomedicine, part of the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering (DSSE); and the Uni.lu student association ISCB RSG Luxembourg.

In short, Students (PhD candidates) present a scientific paper (+- 20 mins) they find interesting or that inspired the development of their individual PhD project (doesn’t need to be authored by the speaker).

There will be a open discussion round after each scientific presentation (2-3 students per event), followed by informal and fun chatting with some pizzas around!

Moreover, each presentation of peer-reviewed papers will be rewarded by 0.5 ECTS!

Carla Duval (https://www.linkedin.com/in/carladuval/)

Bio: Carla is a first-year PhD student in Pr. Daniel Abankwa’s Cancer Cell Biology and Drug Discovery group.  She is working on developing a protein degrader to target and degrade Galectin-3 in order to try to disrupt K-Ras downstream signaling leading to uncontrolled proliferation in cancer.

Title: Identification and affinity enhancement of T-cell receptor targeting a KRASG12V cancer neoantigen, Zhang et al., 2024. (https://www.nature.com/articles/s42003-024-06209-2)

Description: This article describes the generation and identification of murine T-cell receptors that specifically recognize KRASG12V. The authors also determine the structure of the bound complex and conduct structure-based design to create and evaluate TCR variants with enhanced affinity.

Atanasio Gómez Mulas (https://www.uni.lu/fstm-en/people/atanasio-gomez-mulas/)

Bio: Atanasio is a 1st year PhD student at the Cancer Cell Biology and Drug Discovery Group, under the supervision of Daniel Abankwa. The group specialises in the study of RAS proteins, major oncogenes in human cancer, and his focus is on modulating the interaction of Kras and its transport protein PDE6D.

Title:  The discovery and maturation of peptide biologics targeting the small G-protein Cdc42: A bioblockade for Ras-driven signaling, Tetley et al., 2020. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7049977/)

Description: The Ras superfamily of proteins includes major oncogenes which have proven difficult to target. Rho proteins belong to this group of proteins and their inhibition could combat Ras-driven cancers. This paper explores the use of cell-penetrating peptides as an approach to tackle the Rho protein Cdc42 signalling cascade.

If we attracted your interest by now, feel free to join the monthly Pizza Club, either as part of Audience or as a registered Speaker. For the latter, please kindly use this form to sign up as an upcoming Speaker, by choosing your category of paper and desired month to present. Looking forward to seeing you at the next Pizza Club!
